Ya Can't Hide It In A Book: Urban Book Club
About
Thank you for coming to the group 😊 Growing up I was lucky to have a father that had an insatiable appetite for knowledge! This meant TONS of books around the house ranging from Roots to Mark Twain's The Lowest Animal. My mother loved romance novels and urban mystery! So there was no escaping reading for me.
Something that I often heard, and felt angered by, was the phrase "If you don't want black people to know something, put it in a book!". I felt this was such a low and disrespectful stereotype, and as a child I thought it to be true. I was one of the only little girls in my class that loved to read! It was not cool to have your head in a book in high school.
Growing into a mature young woman, I realized that not only was that stereotype so far from the truth because black folks not only love to read but are exceptional authors! But more over, there were PLENTY of people around me that loved reading all along just as much as I did but felt shy about expressing their love due to the social stigma.
Well I'm here to say no more! "Ya Can't Hide It In A Book: Urban Book Club" will be centered around not just reading, but diving into literature, no ART, as a whole. Black and brown people not only have a space at the table of creative arts, we practically built it ourselves. No longer will we be pushed out.
At the first of every month a new book will commence for the group to read. The title will be announced a week or two prior to allow for time to retrieve the book. I have loads of resources if you're having trouble finding a certain title! This book club is UNISEX and open to all ages. HOWEVER, there will be a separate page for the youth once I have enough youth participants. They will have their own book title selection, events, etc.
Mid month I will host a virtual book discussion to see where everyone is in the book, how is everyone enjoying it, etc. This will be where we discuss the plot of the book and how we feel about the storyline. At the end of the month I will host a discussion event* to go over the entire book, discuss and choose our next title* and fellowship with each other over Trina's Charcuterie Affairs & Champagne.
*These events will be paid ticket prices will be announced with each event.
*There will be a total of five different titles to choose from for the group
